As part our our inquiry into how 'Who we are is shaped by the people around' us, we have been exploring how we are connected to our families. We created family books at home with our families, inspired by Todd Parr's The Family Book. We have been enthusiastically sharing our family books during independent reading and play time. We also had the opportunity to present our family books during Morning Meeting times. We are working on our speaking and listening skills and learning that good presenters show the audience what they are talking about and speak with loud and clear voices. We are also learning that good audiences sit still, look and listen. |

For the last two weeks our Star Name has been Mana. We learned more about Mana through our Star Name interview. We have explored the letters in her name, learning their sounds and formations. We played with this knowledge in different ways, including forming letters with play dough, writing the letters with chalk and acting out the sounds. As we become more familiar with our friends' names we are becoming more and more excited about writing and more confident with letter and sound identification. This week we continued our beautiful number story. You may remember we started our story last week with the number 1. Everyone practiced careful listening and visualization as the story was told. When it was finished we brainstormed all the things from the story and in the world that we could think of that represent the number two. We also learned two poems about the number 2. Sun and moon, why do you never meet? I see the one while the other is asleep. For number 2 go right around, Then make a line across the ground. In our math journals, we each drew a yellow sun and a blue or grey moon to represent two. Then we practiced forming the number 2 with our writing pencils.
Our Star Name routine is our invitation to alphabet knowledge in Kindergarten 1. For the last two weeks we have been investigating our Star Name Max. We have studied the form of the letters, including what they look like and sound like. We've also practiced writing Max's name in our word study journals, outside with chalk, and in our sand tracing journals. What fun we've had learning some new letters, as well as more about one of our new friends!
After we had all written our names, we lined them up from shortest to longest. How many letters are in your name? Do you think your name is short or long?
When I was a little girl, my family journeyed to a place far from home. It was the beautiful valley where a silvery lake was surrounded by moss covered forests. The lake entered the ocean through a small gap in the mountains. My mum called this valley Knysa, but the ancient people had called it ‘The Place of Great Gifts’.
We dressed, collected our baskets, packed a little food and blankets, as we would be gone for many days. When we arrived at the beach, I saw that the tide had pulled back into the ocean and left the widest beach I had ever seen. Slowly, I put my first food onto the beach. So began my journey into a world of wonder…
After listening to the story, we all listened to the ONE special shell. We could hear the whispers of the mermaids! We each took a counting shell and one pearl to put inside it. We discussed all the things that there were one of in the story and that we could think of in our own world. We made a list as a class and learned a poem to remember how to write the number one. We drew one golden sun in our math journals as a representation of the number one and practiced writing the digit. Number one is like a stick
