Our year has come to an end and it's time to say goodbye. We had so much fun exploring, wondering and discovering all year long and made some great friends along the way.

Special goodbyes go to our friends Caileigh, Cailynne, Max and Dillon who will be moving to new countries and schools. Good luck on your new adventures! We will miss you, but hope to talk to you through letters, emails and maybe even Skype!

This week we said goodbye to friends and Kindergarten 1 with a couple of special activities. On Thursday we had a picnic with our families. All week, we spent time writing letters to our friends and shared some of them at our final Afternoon Meeting on Friday.
Happy summer holidays to everyone. Play lots and have fun! See you back at ISS in August! :)

Visiting Kindergarten 2

4/6/2015

Lately we've been talking a lot about the upcoming changes in our lives. We only have 6 days left in Kindergarten 1! Some of us will be moving to Kindergarten 2 at our school and some of us will be moving to different schools or countries. Today we visited a Kindergarten 2 class to do some learning and exploring about the changes we might expect.

Before leaving our classroom we thought of some questions for K2 students and completed a Harvard Project Zero Visible Thinking Routine called Compass Points. This thinking routine helped us to think about our needs, excitements, worries, and suggestions.

Through the discussion, we realized that we had a lot of similar excitements and worries to each other. Mostly we were curious about what would be the same and different between Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2.

Thank you to Kindergarten 2.1 who helped to answer our questions and calm our worries. They also showed us some of their favourite areas, activities, and games in their classroom to help us understand the types of things that happen in K2. Thank you for your help K2.1! We are excited to move to Kindergarten 2!

How Stories Relate to Our World

2/6/2015

As part of our inquiry into how 'Stories are shared and responded to in many ways', we've been exploring the line of inquiry 'How stories relate to our world.
For the last few weeks we've invited lots of mummies and daddies into our classroom to tell or read stories that relate to their worlds. We've heard stories that relate to home countries, history and culture. We've also heard stories read in different languages like Swedish, Japanese, Mongolian, Swiss German and Scottish dialect. Many of us now understand how stories relate to our cultures and experiences. We also know that our favourite stories and the storybooks we own are usually told in our native languages.

Yesterday we celebrated all of our progress and accomplishments in swimming with the Elementary School Swim Gala. We had so much fun visiting 8 different activity stations and showed off our swimming confidence and skills. Thanks to Jenni for helping us in the water and all the other mums and dads who came out to support us. A big thank you to Mr. Nathan and Mr. Dino for organizing! What a fun day!

Storytelling at the Asian Civilisations Museum

Last week we visited the Asian Civilisations Museum to explore some aspects of the local culture and explore how stories relate to beliefs and traditions in this part of the world. We explored the museum in three groups and each heard three different stories.
Since our visit, we have been working on drawing and writing some of the stories we heard. Each of us chose our favourite story and expressed it in the two different ways in our journals.

Retelling the Story of 'The Billy Goats Gruff'

Two weeks ago we went to see The Three Billy Goats Gruff musical play put on by the Singapore Repertory Theatre. Since then we have been reading different versions of the story and working on retelling the story in different ways.

Before we went to the theatre, we read one version of the story and worked on retelling it using puppets and our voices. Through this activity we also practiced being audience members and discussed some of the important ways we can be part of a respectful audience.

We loved The Three Billy Goats Gruff musical play and many of us noticed that it ended a bit differently than the one we read in class. Instead of getting knocked off the bridge, the troll in the play turned to stone! We used the ideas from both versions of the story for our retells.

Some of us worked on transforming the sand tray into a Billy Goats Gruff story. We made sure to include all the characters and scenery and used these items as artefacts for group retells.

Some of us also used the iPads for our retells, focusing on apps like 'Draw & Tell by Duck Duck Moose and My Story.

Most of us were interested in retelling the story through acting, like we saw on the stage at the theatre. Group members designed their own masks, costumes and even built a stage to perform their stories. One group even added sound and music to their performance using the instruments.

Our free play times also became times where we demonstrated our knowledge of the story, using different materials for our retells. Isaiah and Adrian used building blocks to re-enact the bridge parts of the story and some children retold the story through their play outside.

Aarna and Elliot retold the story through painting. They continued to add many new pages to their paintings which ended up as a series of paintings that retold the story.

Earth Day 2015: A Gift for the Trees

This year in K1.2 our Earth Day celebrations focused around our emotional connection to the environment. All year long we have been fascinated with and committed to spending time in the natural spaces around our school and collecting pieces of it to bring inside our classroom. Last week we got the idea for a class project during our outside playtime. When we were talking to the tree and asking him to give us more leaves, a whole heap of leaves fell. This gave Maanya an idea that everyone else loved: "We need to paint leaves for the tree. It's our gift for it because he gave us so many leaves and now we'll give him something!"
Ms. Alison saw a strong connection to appreciation here which is one of our PYP Attitudes. So we set out to collect more leaves and paint them for the tree. We worked for most of the day creating something that we could give to nature in return for all it gives to us.
Finally we strung our painted leaves together and hung them in the place that we thought the tree could see it best. We continued this emergent project throughout the week even extending our painting to sticks and rocks.

We also made an Earth Day poster to share with the school. We were inspired by our own projects and play with natural materials as well as some of the books we read. In the Friday assembly some of us presented and explained our work to the school.

Student-Led Conferences

This week we participated in our very first Student-Led Conferences. This was an opportunity for us to be the leaders as we guided our parents through some of our best work and favourite activities. Thanks to all the mums and dads who came out to support us. We had a great time celebrating our learning and showing how independent we are.
Here are some of our reflections:
  • I liked when we went to music and played instruments. (Caileigh)
  • I liked showing my portfolio on the iPad. (Adrian)
  • Me too. (Dillon)
  • I was like the mum and dad and they were like the kids. I was happy showing them because every day they choose what we have to do and this day we got to choose and they had to listen to me. (Maanya)
  • My mum and dad are a little bit big and I'm a little bit small but when we had to go to another class I had to show them the way and they followed me. (Mana)
  • I was feeling happy because it was all of the things that I do. (Isaiah)
  • When I was showing mum and dad I was happy and it was fun. (Mana)
  • Before I was feeling a bit nervous but then I was okay and happy. (Olympia)
  • I was feeling nervous. (Phoenix)
  • Me too but then it was going and I was happy and happy and happier. (Maanya)

Today we Skyped again with our friends in Saudi Arabia. We asked them the questions that we had after our last Skype Play. We learned that it almost never rains in Saudi Arabia and it definitely doesn't snow! Their country is a desert! They also asked us some questions like if we have any books in our classroom. We wanted to show them our whole classroom library, but decided to share some of our favourite books over Twitter instead. We are looking forward to seeing their favourite books too!
