Following our encounter with the sun earlier this week, we continued to be very interesting in locating and sharing about the different places we observed light. To extend our inquiry, we went on a light hunt around the school. We documented our findings using the recordable whiteboard app 'Explain Everything, which you can see in the video below. | During our light hunt, Ms. Alison noticed that many of us were confused between where light was actually being generated and where it was shining or being reflected. We will continue to explore these concepts next week. |

On Monday, Dillon brought some glow in the dark gloves to school. To glow though they first need light! This sparked a spontaneous inquiry into where we can find light and where the light is coming from. Our search for light also led us to notice and express our theories about shadows. We've been following this emergent inquiry all week by:
Some very interesting theories and questions are emerging which we will post about more as our inquiry continues! Every day as part of our "Good Morning" song the special helper gets to pick an action for us all to do. Recently the children have been interested in jumping up and down. And the number of times the special helper wants us to jump seems to be getting higher and higher! Yesterday we jumped 17 times! This activity is helping us to develop our counting to higher numbers. We are also practicing counting only one number per jump (one-to-one correspondence). I wonder how many times the special helper will want us to jump tomorrow! This week Kindergarten 1 hosted the Deepavali celebrations for the ISS Elementary School. On Tuesday, we celebrated Deepavali as a grade level learning lots about the holiday from our Deepavali experts Ms. Radhika and Mrs. Mano. We learned about important traditions during the festival and made connections to our current unit of inquiry (Light is all around us and behaves in different ways) by exploring the functions and symbolism of light at Deepavali. We also learned a lot about one of our transdisciplinary skills 'safety' as we discussed ideas for how to be safe around candles and lights that might heat up. On Friday, we presented in both Elementary School assemblies. First we shared our version of the story of Deepavali, which we had illustrated and recorded our voices for: Then we did a live presentation of our Deepavali paintings, explaining what important parts of Deepavali they represented. Here are the videos of our first and second assembly performances: Here is some of the kind feedback we got after our performance:
Happy Deepavali everyone!
For the two weeks before our mid-semester holiday our Star Name was Aarna. As usual we practiced making the sounds of her name as well as forming the letters in different ways. "We're making light inside dark!" - Olympia Before our mid-semester holiday, we began a new unit of inquiry as part of the transdisciplinary theme 'How the World Works'. Children were invited to freely explore, play with and inquire into unit concepts through Dark Days, where our main classroom lights were turned off, the natural light from windows was blocked, and we found other ways to see and move around. The children helped create the documentation of their own activities by selecting a favourite photograph of themselves engaging with the provocations and writing what was happening: Here are some of the discoveries, questions, and theories that emerged that we will continue to explore as our unit of inquiry continues:
What a wonderful day full of opportunities to explore our own cultural identities and the multiculturalism of ISS. We had so much fun asking each other about our clothes and our countries and marching across the stage for the Parade of Nations. In Kindergarten 1 we got to explore the Indonesia, USA, Scotland and Philippines country rooms. And what a delicious spread for the international buffet lunch! Thank you to all the mummies and daddies who made this day possible!
A few weeks ago Max asked: Who is the tallest man in the school? This question immediately created a lot of excitement and busy discussion during our Morning Meeting. Theories were shared and everyone agreed that our Principal Mr. Pinchbeck was probably the tallest man in the school. So Ms. Alison asked us two questions:
First we represented our theories and justifications in our math journals:
Next we addressed the question: How can we find out? Again we went to our math journals to represent our ideas. When we presented our ideas in a class meeting and discussed, two main possibilities emerged:
Later that week we invited the five men to our classroom to line them up and measure them. First we lined them up and debated how they should be arranged to be in correct order from shortest to tallest:
Thank you to all of our male teachers who helped us with our investigation!
