This year in K1.2 our Earth Day celebrations focused around our emotional connection to the environment. All year long we have been fascinated with and committed to spending time in the natural spaces around our school and collecting pieces of it to bring inside our classroom. Last week we got the idea for a class project during our outside playtime. When we were talking to the tree and asking him to give us more leaves, a whole heap of leaves fell. This gave Maanya an idea that everyone else loved: "We need to paint leaves for the tree. It's our gift for it because he gave us so many leaves and now we'll give him something!"
Ms. Alison saw a strong connection to appreciation here which is one of our PYP Attitudes. So we set out to collect more leaves and paint them for the tree. We worked for most of the day creating something that we could give to nature in return for all it gives to us.
Finally we strung our painted leaves together and hung them in the place that we thought the tree could see it best. We continued this emergent project throughout the week even extending our painting to sticks and rocks.
We are a group of Kindergarten 1 students at an IB World School in Singapore. Our teacher is Miss Alison. Follow us on our blog and Twitter to see how much we're learning and growing!
