Since the beginning of school we have been playing with numbers. We have been showing what we know through different games and activities and Ms. Alison has been making plans for the next steps in our learning. An important piece of knowledge that we work on developing in Kindergarten 1 is concept of number -- including one-to-one correspondence and the magnitude of numbers. |
Last week we started by digging deeper into the number one through storytelling. After setting up our storytelling circle, Ms. Alison explained a strategy called 'visualization' for helping us to listen to and understand stories without pictures. As we listened to the story of the number one (inspired by a Waldorf mathematics blog), we practiced putting pictures into our head of the words we were hearing: |
We stayed there for many days. We would wake up with the golden sun and wander along the edge of the blue water. We would admire the big trees in the green forest. It was a special time and I felt like something important was about to happen. On the night of the full moon when the moon was big and round, it was time to start our adventure. The moon had magically changed the sea and the tides of the lake and ocean had shifted. The stars were twinkling and I could hear the thundering of the waves on the rocks at the mouth of the lake. I woke up at dawn with mummy saying ‘Come quick Alison, there is so much wonder to see in the world!’ |
We looked to the mountains that were once the land of the ancient Khoi people. This is where we would live, eating from the ocean and sleeping in the caves. We walked towards it; with each step we saw more treasures. I wanted to fill my baskets, but mommy reminded me that we were looking for ONE special shell. ONE that was as old as the sea and carried the whispers of the mermaids. A seagull called out and landed on a shell. I looked at it. On the outside the shell was rough from the tumbling of the waves. But on the inside it was perfect. Mum looked at it, picked it up and smiled. Yes1 This was the one! I carefully wrapped the shell and added it to our basket and continued on our journey. |
A straight line down that's very quick
