This week, we began an inquiry into shapes. Based on her observations and discussions so far this year, Ms. Alison predicted that we would have a lot of prior knowledge about shapes. We worked in small groups and as a whole class to collect and record this knowledge.

One day we each made our own number lines with chalk, showing how we could order and form numbers to 10. When then jumped forwards and backwards on our numbers lines consolidating forward and backward number sequence, as well as our gross motor skills. Later, some of us challenged ourselves to go further than 10!
Next we watched a video which demonstrated the same counting skills:
Later in the week, we practiced the same fives frame technique with a different story. '5 Little Monkeys' also helped us to practice counting forward and back.
By the end of the week, we were ready to extend these organization and counting strategies to Ten Frames. We used the '10 in the Bed' book, video and song to do this:
Star Name: Sen For the last two weeks, our Star Name has been Sen. This was our first introduction to the Star Name programme in our classroom and so far we love it! In Kindergarten 1, Star Name is our invitation to alphabet knowledge. Each 2 weeks, a new child is chosen as our Star Name. As a group, we will study the letters in the name, including what they sound like, look like, and relate to. We will also identify other words that start in a similar way. Every child will also have the opportunity to ask the “Star” a question about him or herself. The letters in the “Star’s” name often will be the focal point of sound sorts, letter hunts, and handwriting. Since we started our Star Name routine, we have become very interested in writing all of our friends' names during our free play and exploration time. This action shows our authentic interest in writing as a communication and connection strategy, as well as our developing relationships with peers.
We then had a chance to visit three different stations where we were able to sort a variety of materials in different ways:
Our names make us unique:
Just like Chrysanthemum, we all have special names. As a class, we talked about what makes our names special:
One night there was a full moon. When we went out, we could see that the moon had magically changed the sea. The tide had shifted. The stars twinkled and I could hear the sound of waves on the rocks of the beach. My mum said to me, "Come quick Alison...there is so much wonder to see in the world!"
