As part of our inquiry into Who We Are, we have continued to share and wonder about our families. This week we used families to support our numeracy skills, including counting (one to one correspondence & organising strategies) and numeral writing.
First we re-read The Family Book and counted members of all the diverse families represented. We spontaneously started to use words like "big" and "small" to describe their size, which showed that we also understand some concepts and vocabulary of measurement. |
Next we watched a video which demonstrated the same counting skills:
Then we had a chance to count the members of our own families. We learned how to represent them using a fives frame - including starting on the left hand side and placing only one person (or object) in each space. By learning this new method of representation, we were visually-supported in making comparisons between our families, which led us to think about concepts like 'more', 'less', 'bigger', and 'smaller'. This knowledge about our families has also connected us to understanding the relative magnitude of whole numbers.

Later in the week, we practiced the same fives frame technique with a different story. '5 Little Monkeys' also helped us to practice counting forward and back.
By the end of the week, we were ready to extend these organization and counting strategies to Ten Frames. We used the '10 in the Bed' book, video and song to do this:
