What a wonderful day! K1 experienced their first ever ISS International Day. We viewed the Parade of Nations, some drama performances, and visited 4 different county rooms - Japan, China, Malaysia, and Australia. The day ended off with a delicious international food buffet. Everyone showed their national pride and showed a lot of interest and open-mindedness to the cultures of others! Thanks to all the families, teachers, and students who made this special day possible!

Skype Play with BISS

Yesterday we had our first Skype call with our new Kindergarten friends at our sister school, BISS, in Beijing. Both classes of children were so excited to meet each other after a few weeks of technical delays. First we greeted and introduced ourselves by name. Then we each had a chance to show some exciting things from our classrooms and learning. Some of us even prepared special gifts to surprise our new friends!
Through our sharing we found that we had many things in common! For example, we had a lot of the same favourite books and stories. This was a wonderful conceptual connection to our current unit of inquiry (Who We Are: We are the same and different to other people.)

Next time we talk to our friends we want to do even more sharing. In between our video calls we will share things via email. We are currently working on preparing videos of our goodbye song and Keshav reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear to send to our friends. They will be sending us a video of their goodbye song which they sing in English...and Mandarin!

For the last two weeks our Star Name has been Eiji. As usual, we investigated the FORM of his name by exploring the letters and sounds. We also participated in a range of other literacy activities, including practicing handwriting our Star Name Eiji, building and matching upper- and lower-case letters, and matching rhyming picture cards.

To help us learn more about our Star Name Eiji, we also watched Sesame Street podcasts for the letters E and J:

Origami Workshop

Today we had an origami workshop with some of the Japanese mums from our class. We got the idea for this event when Sen shared some of her origami during a Morning Meeting.

Learning about origami was an important unit of inquiry connection for us. Through the activities we now understand more about the Japanese culture and traditions, as well as 'Who We Are' as a class community. Thank you to the mums who came to support our learning! We had a lot of fun!

Whole Body Self-Portraits: A Culminating Project

9/10/2016

Throughout our 'Who We Are' unit of inquiry we have been exploring personal identity through the central idea: 'We are the same and different to other people'. As a final consolidation of and reflection on our inquiry, we have been working on creating whole body self-portraits.

We used giant tracings of our whole bodies to express our identities creatively using a range of materials. We took the time to explore our physical features again using mirrors and carefully selected materials to accurately represent our FORM, including eye colour, hair colour, and skin colour.

We learned that 'who we are' is made up of many different pieces - not just our physical features. We included drawings and photographs of our family members, friends, favourite things, countries, and more, to show this.

Family Morning in K1

6/10/2016

This week we celebrated and engaged with our Who We Are unit of inquiry with some special guests - our families! On Tuesday morning, our parents came to join our morning routines and support us with two different activities - portrait drawing and visualising connections.
Picture
First our families played with us and joined our Morning Meeting.

The we read a story together called Monkey Puzzle (by Julia Donaldson), which helped us think about FORM (physical features) and CONNECTION (how we look the same and different to our families).

Using the story as inspiration to focus on FORM, we created portraits of our parents, concentrating on accurately representing the shapes and colours of their physical features.
We also wondered: "How am I connected to the people around me?" We drew pictures of ourselves and our friends and family, as well as the things we have in common. For example, our favourite foods and activities.
We finished the morning with a shared potluck snack!

Thank you to all the mums and dads who joined our Family Morning and supported our learning! We hope you had fun!

Counting Forward and Back

Our class has been practicing counting forward and backward in different ways to achieve this understanding:

            Identify the number before and
                      after a given number.

This week and last week, we practiced using number lines.

One day we each made our own number lines with chalk, showing how we could order and form numbers to 10. When then jumped forwards and backwards on our numbers lines consolidating forward and backward number sequence, as well as our gross motor skills.  Later, some of us challenged ourselves to go further than 10!
