We started by observing the FORM of the sky illustrations in the story. Sen made an interesting observation when she said "It's afternoon". This connected us to the idea that the sky colour can change at different times of day. We represented our individual theories about sky colour changes in our journals: |
We also spent time observing the sky in our own environments. First we took photographs at school and created paintings from our photos:
Some of us also photographed our sky observations at home:
All the while, we continued to share and discuss our theories at school. Many of us also made connections as we explored other books:
To extend our thinking further about CHANGE, we read the book Day and Night. For our first time reading, we just viewed the illustrations, noting observations about the colour of the sky at different times of day. When we read the book a second time, we learned how the Earth turns one time every day, making the sun apppear in different positions in the sky. Ms. Alison demontrated this to us and we continued to explore the idea during our free play. We also represented our conclusions and connections about how the sky colour changes in our journals. |
