This week we went on a field trip to the road near our school as part of our 'How we organize ourselves' inquiry into movement. Before we left school we prepared for our trip with some reading and discussion. After exploring the big book Look out on the road, we shared some of our ideas about road safety:
|
Different forms of movement:
- Walking (Kotoha, Jay)
- Scootering (Rui & Jumi)
- Driving & riding - bus (Carlotta, Ko, Rui), truck (Ko & Eddie), car (Jay, Ko), motorcycle (Gracie)
- Bicycle-ing (Gracie)
Analyzing Movement:
- They're going to work because they were running. (Jay)
- They were going to work on their scooters because it's much faster. (Rui)
- He's going to work because he's going fast. (Eddie)
Safety:
- People were not walking on the red man to be safe. (Jay)
- They were stopping on the red man because the cars are going. (Rui)
- They are waiting because the traffic light has a red man. (Carlotta)
- We stopped at the red man. (Gracie)
- It's green light and they're crossing. It's red light and they're stopping. When it's flashing, he's walking quickly to get there before it goes red. (Eddie)
- Don't close your eyes on a bicycle. (Jumi)
- Don't go 'vroom vroom' [swerving] in the car. (Jumi)
- Green man go, red man stop. (Carlotta)
- [Some people] were crossing when it's red. That's not safe. (Eddie)
- We were holding a grown up's hand. (Jay)
- We were just walking. (Jay)
- Wear a helmet when you ride a bike. (Gracie)
- Don't go too close to the road in case a car accidentally goes there. (Gracie)
- Look before you start crossing. (Gracie)
