Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archibald is currently one of our favourite books in K1.2! This is a great thing, because it's really helping us to develop our alphabet knowledge.
In the story, all of the lower-case letters of the alphabet climb up a coconut tree and then fall down! When all of their "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts" come to help them out, we see how the lower-case letters connect to capital (or upper-case) letters. |
Alphabet knowledge (sounds, letters & the relationship between them) is not the only thing we've been learning through this book. We've also been developing our emergent reading skills.
We've practiced 'reading' the main repeating part of the story using pretend and memorized reading (applying our memory of the story & using the illustrations as clues to read the words). As we 'read' we also try our best to point to the words as we're reading them, or at least track from left to right along the line of words. This is developing our understanding of the difference between illustrations and text. It is also developing our Concept of Word in Text (COW-T) -- matching spoken word to text. |
