For the last two weeks our Star Name has been Rui. We learned that he has a very tricky letter in his name. His first letter is R, but it sounds like L! This comes from Rui's Japanese heritage. As usual, we practiced writing the letters in his name and made connections to other words that start with the R sound. We investigated the form of the letters in his name, including shape and sound. |

We also practiced our emergent writing skills by drawing and labelling our own gingerbread men: Finally we celebrated our learning and practiced retelling the story by baking our very own gingerbread men! This also allowed us to explore some measurement concepts.
To learn more about why coding (or programming) is important, check out this article from the Canadian Broadcasting Company: Why Kids Should Learn to Code and How to Get Them Started Thanks to Mr. Gallagher for supporting us with this experience. For a sneak peak of what we're up to next with coding, check out these Bee-Bots. Hmmm...I wonder what we'll get up to!
For the last two weeks our Star Name has been Jay. We studied his name in different forms, including Jay and his full name 'Jean-Louis'. Since Jay is a short name ("Only 3 letters!"), we also practiced writing some of our other friends' names in our Word Work journals using the photo and name cards available to us in the classroom Writing Centre.
Their show was followed by a question and answer session:
Jay: Why did you have no sound? C & E: We wanted to be sure that you were relaxing. It was a relaxing show. Kotaru: Was the show kind of like Shadow Bear? C & E: Yes because we wanted it to be like the Bear Shadow storybook.
This inspired two other groups of children to make their own shows! Kotaru and Jay made puppets and performed using light and shadow. Rui and Jumi used the light projector and other class toys and materials to perform a show using light.
We've read lots of books that rhyme and listened to different songs, all the time working on identifying words that rhyme. We've also worked on sorting words into different rhyme groups both as a whole class and individually in our Word Work journals.
For the last three weeks our Star Name has been Kotaru. We investigated the FORM of the letters in his name (letter shape & sound) and interviewed him to learn a little bit more about our friend. |
