Two symbols that really attracted our attention were the plus sign and equals sign. Most of us had used these, but in different ways, which showed that we had seen them before, but weren't quite sure yet how to apply them. The children worked together to swap ideas and construct an independent understanding of these symbols. Then then worked together with Ms. Alison to record combinations to 5 and 10 using the plus sign. |
As our number knowledge has continued to expand, we have challenged ourselves to explore what happens when numbers are combined. For the last few weeks we have been playing a version of 'Go Fish' in which we search for pairs that combine together to make 5 or 10. We have used different manipulatives to help with our counting and number lines to help with our 'counting on'. This week we took a new step and attempted to record the pairs that make 5 in our own unique ways. We worked with a buddy to play Go Fish, make combinations, and then show our thinking in writing. We then shared our work with the whole class which led to some discussion about the "best" ways to record and different symbols and strategies that can be used to do so.
