This year, Kindergarten 1 hosted the Deepavali celebrations for the Elementary School at ISS.
Last week we started our preparations with some learning. Mrs. Mano (our Deepavali expert!) showed us a story and some artefacts that are important for Hindu people who celebrate Deepavali. We participated in Rangoli, henna, and other activities. We then watched a video to learn more about the story behind Deepavali. |
Today was the special day to share Deepavali with the rest of the school! We all remembered and arrived to school very excited! We got the diya, flowers, muruku, kesari, mango leaves and information cards ready and spread out around the school for sharing.
Kindergarten 1.2 proved to have some very confident and knowledgeable speakers who were able to explain to other classes what items were being shared and what they symbolized. We also shared a little bit about safety with candles, which is one of our 'Approaches to Learning' (transdisciplinary skills) for our current unit of inquiry.

Later in the morning, Navi's mum (K1.1) shared more information about Deepavali with us. She read us a story and had two activities prepared.
First we used our fine motor and visual-spatial skills to add coloured powder to rangoli art. Then we painted clay diya (oil lamps). Thank you to everyone who supported us over the course of this beautiful learning journey. Happy Deepavali! :) |
Later in the week we had a Kindergarten class from Bulgaria contact us through Twitter. This gave us a chance to show what we have really learned and remembered about Deepavali!
