This week, we began an inquiry into shapes. Based on her observations and discussions so far this year, Ms. Alison predicted that we would have a lot of prior knowledge about shapes. We worked in small groups and as a whole class to collect and record this knowledge.

Next we all had an opportunity to dance - responding to different types of music and moving our bodies in different ways.
At the end of our dance session, Sen modelled some ballet positions and poses.
For the last 2 weeks our Star Name has been Alisha. Since her name has sounds we have already explored, it gave us an opportunity to confidently share our alphabet and sound knowledge. Great progress K1!
In PE, we have been working on creating a class book about the ways we move. We each contributed and demonstrated one movement idea, recording our voices over our movement photo. This book is now available in our classroom library for reading.
Starting with the words over, under, through, up, and down from the story, we began to make a big list of words that can be used to describe direction and position. We then tried hard to apply this knowledge to describe the moves we made last week on our field trip to the Adventure Playground, using the Puppet Pals iPad app to record.
As we walked through the park to the playground, we used our observation skills to notice how other people were moving. We saw runners, cyclists and people "exercising" by doing stretching and push-ups. These observations helped us to express some of our initial theories about why people choose to move in different ways.
On the playground, it was amazing to see how the children used their thinking skills to analyze and evaluate. These are two of the PYP Approaches to Learning that we are focusing on during this Unit of Inquiry. The children carefully analyzed and evaluated how best to move their bodies and how to navigate the challenging structures safely. They observed their peers carefully to support their thinking.
As our movement inquiry continues, we will be reflecting on our Adventure Playground experience by reviewing the photographs and videos and discussing our memories. We will be representing our movement through different language including visual art and writing.
After our time in the MPR, we reviewed the documentation (photos, videos, and teacher notes). We created drawings and wrote words in our journals to represent the favourite way we moved. We learned how to write "I am" and practiced applying our alphabet knowledge to sound out and record other words.
We showed our work to our classmates and discussed as a group all the different ways we moved. We have started recording our ideas about movement on a Golden Circle chart. Here are some of the movement words we used and discussed:
