Near the beginning of our inquiry into how 'Light behaves in different ways', we practiced formulating questions based on experiences and explorations during our Dark Days. The questions or 'I wonders' that emerged became the starting point for some individual and small group inquiries. After collecting our questions, we each expressed interest in areas we wanted to continue exploring by signing up for 'mini inquiry groups'. Our inquiries were guided by our own theories and ideas, as well as a basic inquiry cycle (or scientic process).

Is there a battery inside [the light projector]?
This group theorized that the light coming from the light machines was powered by batteries or a light bulb. They had an opportunity to observe and investigate a light machine that had been pulled apart and discover what was inside. They concluded that there are no batteries, but instead 2 lightbulbs and a long cord and plug that gets electricity from the wall. |
How do the beads go with the light?
This group wondered how we could see dark bead images on the ceiling after shining flashlights on the bead curtain. They theorized that they were reflections created by small mirrors inside the beads. When asked, they also expressed a belief that reflections and shadows are the same phenomena. After several shadow demonstrations and opportunities to play with shining light on different objects, they discovered the difference between shadows and reflections. They learned words like 'shadow' and 'blocking' to describe their new understandings and observations.

How do the squares light up? Why does it light like that?
This group wondered about the light spots we can see when light is shined on disco balls. They understood that the spots were caused by the light and spent more time investigating the FORM of disco balls to see how the balls helped to create the light spots. They noticed that there were small squares on the balls, which were also shiny. They spent some time comparing mirrors and disco balls and noticed a connection.

How does the light machine make a rainbow on the carpet?
This group observed rainbows appearing near the light machines and wondered 'how does this work?' Some theories were shared, including that there might be a rainbow inside the machine or that the batteries were making the rainbow.
They explored the light machines further and watched a video about how rainbows are created. Through further exploration and discussion they began to understand how light appears white, but is actually made up of 7 different colours. When the light is bent by glass (refraction), the rainbow colours appear. |
How does the light go on the screen [from the light projector]? &
Why is my hand so high?
Why is my hand so high?
This group investigated the FORM and FUNCTION of light projectors. In the beginning they had various theories, involving batteries and rainbows. Some group members noticed a connection between the top part of the light machine and where the light shined when the position of the flap changed.
After investigating the inside of a split apart light projector, the group observed a series of mirrors. When the concept of 'reflection' was introduced, they were able to trace the path of light from the light bulb and between 3-4 different mirrors. |
