Star Name: Sen
For the last two weeks, our Star Name has been Sen. This was our first introduction to the Star Name programme in our classroom and so far we love it!
In Kindergarten 1, Star Name is our invitation to alphabet knowledge. Each 2 weeks, a new child is chosen as our Star Name. As a group, we will study the letters in the name, including what they sound like, look like, and relate to. We will also identify other words that start in a similar way. Every child will also have the opportunity to ask the “Star” a question about him or herself. The letters in the “Star’s” name often will be the focal point of sound sorts, letter hunts, and handwriting.

Since we started our Star Name routine, we have become very interested in writing all of our friends' names during our free play and exploration time. This action shows our authentic interest in writing as a communication and connection strategy, as well as our developing relationships with peers.
Sorting Connecting to our Star Name Sen and words that start with 'S'. We have also been exploring sorting. This is a natural activity for many of us, but for all of us it was a new word. After seeing some examples of sorting, we decided together that sorting is putting things into different groups. We worked together to sort the squishy toys in our classroom, coming up with 3 different ways:

We then had a chance to visit three different stations where we were able to sort a variety of materials in different ways:
